I am the proud owner of two Dachshunds; AKA Weenie Dogs. These two 15 and 13 pounds of pure snuggly fun definitely rule our household. They are the stealer of the blankets and are always around to capture a few stray crumbs that find their way to the floor. However, their favorite pastime is discovering ways to escape from the backyard so that they can take on the neighbor’s dogs in a bark competition.
Naturally, the dogs that my furry babies decide to take on in this competition could eat mine for lunch, but that doesn’t faze them one bit. In fact, one dog in specific finds my little barkers particularly funny and antagonizes them by running from one side of the fence to the other. This not only drives the dogs crazy but also gets them chasing him as fast as their short little legs can carry them.
Over the years, we have found ways to keep them in the fence, but this wasn’t after many failed attempts. Luckily, our little ones have always found their way back home. Sometimes, though, I would love to have seen the adventure take place for myself.
One adventure, in particular, was pretty exciting. Both decided to take their own direction and ended up in pretty funny locations after everything was said and done. My younger, bigger Dachshund took the high-road. When we found her, some of the neighborhood kids had trapped her in their yard. Naturally being as adorable as she is, they weren’t ready to part with her, so we basically had to steal her back from them.
While she was being captured, by older Dachshund decided that he didn’t want any part of being trapped in a yard, which is understandable since he had just escaped from ours. His plan was a little more adventurous. He took to the woods behind our house and became stuck after swimming through a creek.
Once he got to the other side, he was wet and cold and couldn’t find his way back again. Being the big baby that he is, he set off on some pitiful yelping that helped us track his location. After a good scolding, both dogs received a bath and quickly snuggled up in their favorite blankets.
Even though they can be pretty rotten at times, these dogs that live in my house are truly part of the family. It will be exciting to see what the next few years bring to us and our adventurous dogs. Hopefully, eventually they will learn their lesson and stay at home where they belong, but I seriously doubt that they will.
