We've all seen them. Those sappy movies that tend to make women cry and to expect their significant others to do absurd things to prove their love. They are the reason little girls dream of being princesses and wait for Prince Charming to ride in on his white horse. But, as hopeless romantics, we each have at least one movie couple we secretly wish could make it in real life. These are our top five.
Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks
Their movies give us a bit of innocent hopefulness that we might find the one person that's made for us. They may be across the country or disguised as our enemy, but one day the universe will align just right and we will find them. It is about time for a new film starring these two, for us to be swept up in the down to earth love that they've shared before.
Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler
With a pair of extremely cute movies together, they've shown us that the right person isn't always the one we are with or even the ones we remember. They've proven that even after receiving a horrific brain injury or becoming engaged to another, love will find a way. Voted people's choice for 'Best Onscreen Chemistry', after watching their movies, it is easy to see why.
Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio
Oh, Jack Dawson (sigh). You captured our hearts, and Rose's, with the fun and freedom that you promised. Even though Rose and Jack's future wasn't to be, we were happy to learn that true love goes on forever and they are reunited in death. The pair did eventually reunite in 2008 to film Revolutionary Road, but the magic wasn't the same. We will continue to hold onto the hope that Rose and Jack Dawson will emerge in real life.
Julia Roberts and Richard Gere
It's hard to forget about this couple. 'Pretty Woman' swept us away into a world of forbidden pleasure and luxury, while 'Runaway Bride' caught us up in wedding drama. We are reminded that, at times, love requires forgiveness, sacrifice, and patience; and that we don't pick who we fall in love with, but when we do, we should fight for them.
Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling
You can't help but love 'The Notebook'. It not only shows us that true love never dies or can be truly forgotten, but that regardless of one's status in life, it is always possible for two unlikely people to cross paths and fall in love. Even though Ryan Gosling has a beautiful new baby and an equally beautiful girlfriend, we can’t help but dream that we would see this couple play out the movie in real life. After all, we are true romantics, right?
Conclusion
So, even though we may roll our eyes while watching them, we still secretly love romantic movies. There is just something about a happy ending that makes us feel that all is right with the universe.
